Case Studi · Smart communication for water and energy infrastructure in Abu Dhabi.

In 2022 Datakorum was awarded one of the largest IoT projects in the UAE region, to provide connectivity to the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) assets of TAQA’s power and water distribution companies, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC).

One of the big challenges we faced was that we had to collect data from 80,000 electricity and water meters, in an infrastructure with 70 different meter models from 35 manufacturers and different communication protocols: Pulse, 4-20mA, M-Bus, Modbus, Severn Trend, DLMS and Euridis.

fter analysing this scenario, we decided that our family of PIPE 5G Gateways had the necessary features to tackle the task. These connect in a quick and easy Plug&Play way to meters or sensors from any manufacturer with any communication protocol, collecting data at defined intervals and sending it to the management platform via 5G wireless communication (NB-IoT and CAT-M1).

The project was segmented into three main groups according to use case with specific gateways for each:

  • Reading of distribution and villas water meters (one gateway reads one meter).
  • Electricity meter reading for buildings (one gateway reads many meters), and villas (one gateway reads one meter).
  • Simultaneous reading of electricity and water meter in villas (one gateway reads both meters).

For the deployment phase, DATAKORUM provided the installer with its BASE CAMP software tool, which allows installers to easily configure, connect and send data to the management platform to verify that the device installation has been successfully completed in a few simple steps.

Thanks to 5G technology, we get a wide coverage range with high penetration capability indoors and underground, its high energy efficiency allows for longer battery life, and in terms of security we get SIM-based authentication features and high-level encryption for secure data transfer.

In this way, the uniform and periodic data is sent to TRANGO IoT, a software installed “On Premise” for the management of Datakorum gateways, which analyses the status of the installation and the health of the devices, manages the data received in real time and allows remote firmware updates (FOTA).

Over the course of 2023, the deployment of 80,000 Datakorum 5G gateways for remote smart meter reading has enabled ADDC to achieve a significant reduction in unbilled energy and water. This translates into improved efficiency in the metering and management of both resources, as well as optimised asset lifetimes. In addition, the quality of customer service has been increased by providing detailed, real-time information on their electricity and water consumption.
