Last Monday marked the conclusion of the Deutsche Telekom Satellite NB-IoT Early Adopter Program, and we are pleased to announce that Datakorum has been awarded the Innovation Award. According to the organizers, the recognition is granted for:
“Their exceptional results in the overall degree of innovation, their pioneering efforts have not only elevated their own products but have also inspired others in the industry to strive for greater innovation.”
This initiative involved 25 companies from 10 countries, collaborating in the development of prototype global solutions using convergent terrestrial and non-terrestrial satellite NB-IoT technologies.
The solution presented by Datakorum addresses the monitoring of sensors for critical infrastructure in remote locations without cellular coverage, specifically by providing communication to dynamic air purge smart valves in main water network pipelines.
In terms of hardware, we worked on the implementation of satellite NB-IoT using a new communication module that is in the process of certification with several satellite providers. Additionally, we incorporated new antennas, increased device memory, and implemented contactless memory reading interfaces, such as NFC.
Regarding firmware, we developed mechanisms for handover between terrestrial NB-IoT and satellite NB-IoT (NTN) networks. In situations where only satellite connectivity is available, only alarms will be sent via satellite.
Finally, in middleware and the platform, we integrated a new data packet format that works seamlessly for both terrestrial and satellite NB-IoT.
This award is a significant achievement for our development team, who have worked tirelessly on this project since Datakorum was invited to participate at the beginning of this year. The program provided a comprehensive testing platform for the non-terrestrial (NTN) narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, allowing designers and developers to validate their solutions according to the 3GPP Release 17 (Rel-17) NTN specifications.
The Satellite NB-IoT Early Adopter Program, led by Deutsche Telekom in collaboration with Skylo and Murata, was created to address the significant challenges of limited cellular coverage and facilitate data transmission in extensive areas. The integration of satellite communication in the program promotes the rapid development and deployment of NB-IoT solutions, ensuring reliable, ubiquitous, and secure data transmission.
We are proud to have contributed to this innovative program and to receive this recognition, which reinforces our commitment to innovation and excellence in the IoT connectivity sector.
